Customer Reviews about Companion Care (Bolton):

  • I was less than pleased with my experiences at this practice and would certainly not recommend it to others. So much of the service is geared toward getting as much money as possible out of owners and the whole affair felt like an impersonal conveyor belt with little concern for the animal.

When I first brought my puppy home, I booked her into Companion Care due to the convenience of it being in a pet shop which we visit regularly anyway. This was a mistake. If anything, the pet shop environment makes the experience altogether more uncomfortable. The waiting area is cramped and noisy and the constant hustle and bustle of people walking around isnt particularly calming for nervous pets. This might not be so bad if appointments were seen on time but on every occasion I visited we were called into the consultation room over 40 minutes late with no apologies made.

My first visit unexpectedly cost me well over £100 due to a tummy upset. I paid it as I felt it was the best thing for my pet. However, there were around 4 different medications prescribed, which seemed excessive. There was no discussion as to the price of these medications or whether all of them were necessary. I was simply told what she was being prescribed and then billed for a mystery amount upon leaving the consultation room. This trend continued for every appointment.

When my puppy received her first vaccination, she shortly afterward contracted kennel cough. I believe that this was due to the negligence of the veterinary and reception staff. Another dog was present in the waiting room with symptoms of severe coughing. This was obvious even to a non-veterinary professional such as myself. What I did not know at the time, but what the staff should have known, was that kennel cough is extremely contagious and that best practice is to keep dogs displaying such symptoms separate from others whilst waiting to be seen. This is a policy which is in place at my new veterinary practice. However, no such precautions were taken at Companion Care, even when my pet was a young and unvaccinated puppy who was at even greater risk.

Of course, this new condition then cost me additional money to set right. I was then informed that the initial vaccination had expired and that if I wanted to start the course again I would need to pay the full price of the first vaccine for a second time. At this point the practice had already had well over £200 from me and I still had a puppy who was not vaccinated and was now unwell despite my doing everything right. At one point, to avoid the mounting consultation fees, I requested that the vet prescribe another weeks worth of antibiotics and defer the appointment until the following week as there was no improvement in her condition. I was told that somebody would definitely get back to me that day but never heard anything.

It was at this point that I decided Id had quite enough of the poor service and financial extortion and took my puppy elsewhere. I really would suggest searching for a more personal and less corporate place to take your pet. I now go to a small family-run practice and it is a totally different experience which I am very happy with.
